Anantapur: The Forest Department officials and staff, under the supervision of Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy, managed to trap a two-year-old leopard on the outskirts of Chinnampalle village in Sellur mandal of Anantapur district on Thursday, with the help of local residents.

The leopard was brought to the district headquarters here, fed and treated before being released into safe zone. The Forest Department staff laid traps for the dreaded animal which had been causing panic among villagers by killing and eating cattle. The residents gave information to the department after sighting the leopard for two days.

The Minister, who is also the local MLA, when told about the leopard causing terror among the residents, camped in the village to give courage to them. He gave instructions to the Forest Department staff. Speaking to the media, the Minister praised the Forest Department staff for trapping the leopard.

District Forest Officer Raghavaiah, quoting information from the department, said there were 50-60 leopards in Anantapur district. He stated that these animals were moving into residential areas for various reasons, including shortage of food and drinking water. They had so far harmed animals, sparing people. DFO Srinivasulu and local leaders participated in the efforts to trap the leopard. Local residents were relieved when the animal was caught and shifted to the forest.
