Kadapa: Congress leader and former Minister S Sailajanath came down heavily on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders for ‘deceiving’ the people of Andhra Pradesh by changing their stand on special category status to the State. He expressed solidarity with the Congress leaders who were participating in a relay hunger strike in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, the former Minister said the BJP leaders had demanded the then Congress-led UPA government to extend special category status to Andhra Pradesh for 10 to 15 years. He alleged that the BJP-led NDA government was ‘deceiving’ the people by not fulfilling the promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act.

Sailajanath found fault with Union Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu for contradicting his own statement on special status, which he made during the time of State bifurcation. He asked Venkaiah Naidu why he was saying that granting of special category status to the State was not possible when he himself demanded the UPA government in the Rajya Sabha to increase the tenure of special status to Andhra Pradesh from five to 10 years.

The Congress leader said the State government could pay only salaries to its employees with the funds sanctioned by the Union government. Moreover, the State was earning less revenue post-bifurcation. He wondered how it was possible for the State to develop with the shortage of funds. The Congress would intensify its agitations if the Centre failed to fulfil all provisions included in the AP Reorganisation Act, he warned.
