Arrangements being made to give State funeral

Nellore: Top district officials are making sustained efforts to bring back the body of Malli Mastan Babu and hand it over to family members once it reaches Chennai. Mountaineer Mastan Babu died in the Andes Hills in Chile. They are also putting in place arrangements to give a state funeral to the departed Guinness record-holder.

The officials have already written to the State government indicating their intent to arrange a State funeral. Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and Minister P Narayana are personally intervened in ensuring that the body is brought here at the earliest. People in Nellore district are unable to reconcile themselves to the passing away of Mastan Babu, more so those in his native place of Gandhi Janasangham. They are holding condolence meetings across the towns. Leaders of various political parties and both the government and private employees are consoling the bereaved family members.

The villagers are looking forward to the day when the body is to reach Gandhi Janasangham. His friends and well-wishers are spending anxious moments recalling their association with the late mountaineer who has brought glory both to the State and the country. Mastan Babu’s mother Subbamma is going into periodic spells of loss of consciousness, recalling the sweet and bitter memories they shared when the family spent a good time during May last.

The occasion was the gathering in the village of his elder sister Mastanamma, brother Pedda Mastanaiah, and younger sister Dr Dorasanamma. Later they had gone on a tour of Sikkim, where Mastan Babu took up some mountaineering, taking care to explain to them his close bonding with scaling peaks.

Korukonda School pays tributes to its alumnus

Vizianagaram: The staff and students of Korukonda Sainik School here paid tributes to late mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu, who was a student of the school from 1985 to 1992. Addressing the gathering, Registrar Ashok Babu said that he and Mastan, who was senior by two years, belonged to the same district.

“Hence during holidays, we used to visit our villages.” He said the mountaineer was interested in sports and cultural activities since childhood and was keen on doing something unique for the country. The Registrar described Mastan’s death atop a mountain in Chile as ‘unfortunate’.
