Hyderabad: On Wednesday, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Andhra Pradesh government took the charge over the probe of Seshachalam encounter where 20 woodcutters from Tamil Nadu were killed when the Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force allegedly fired on them on April 7 in Chittoor District.


Senior IPS officer Ravishankar Ayyanar along with an eight-member team gathered all the documents to the April 7 incident from the Tirupati Urban Police and stated that they have taken over the investigation. Mr Ravishankar said that after the documents are verified and scrutinized, they will visit the place of the incident.


The Chandragiri police under Tirupati Urban Police limits registered an FIR based on the complaint filed by Muniyammal, wife of one of the victims on April 14, under section 302 (murder) and section 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder) against unknown task force personnel.


On April 24, Andhra Pradesh government constituted the SIT headed by an inspector general-rank officer to probe the Seshachalam incident. The SIT has been directed by the Hyderabad High Court to conclude the probe within the duration of 60 days and submit a report.
