Union Minister says Centre wants to keep hands off Section 8 issue

New Delhi: Even as the confusion over Governor's powers under Section 8 of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, in the common capital of Hyderabad continued to prevail, a senior Union minister who has close relationship with Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday refuted reports of Centre's intervention in the tussle over cash-for-vote.

Preferring anonymity, the minister said the issue was a matter between the two Telugu States and the Chief Ministers of the respective States should thrash out the issue on their own. If both the States preferred so and seek Centre's intervention, then the Centre could think of stepping-in, the minister reiterated. "On our own we don't even entertain the thought", he said.

Meanwhile, the CPI central committee member, Narayana, accused both the governments as being responsible for the mess prevailing now. The very cash-for-vote scam was a result of horse-trading going on for quite some time. He had sought the High Court's intervention in this regard.

Narayana said action must be initiated against those switching loyalties soon after getting elected under the relevant provisions. But, it was not being done by the Speakers of the Assemblies. He accused both the Chief Ministers of politicising Section 8 and also wondered why Chandrababu Naidu was making such a hue and cry now. Seeking action against the guilty in the cash-for-vote scam, he urged the Governor to intervene or the Centre should ask the Governor to do the same.
