Faces travails for PG seat

Rajasekhar Goud alias MadhuriKurnool: Rajasekhar Goud of Mittala village in Mudithuru mandal, who became Madhuri after a sex change operation, is fighting for her rights. She wants to be treated as a human being and allowed to study in the Rayalaseema University. Madhuri is ready for a legal battle to be allowed to pursue a PG course under the transgender quota.

Rajasekhar Goud, who belongs to a farmer’s family, has been behaving differently since childhood. The family gave Rajasekhar a free hand to lead a life of his choice. He wanted to study well to become a police officer. To achieve this goal, Rajasekhar joined school and proved that he was inferior to none, though the first rank eluded him.

After Intermediate, Rajasekhar opted for a sex change operation in Mumbai and became Madhuri. After securing a degree from Sairam Degree College in Nandikotkur, she applied for a PG study in the university. Madhuri appeared for the entrance test as Rajasekhar since there was no option for a transgender. Although Madhuri secured a rank, the authorities refused to allot a seat now, since there is discrepancy in the gender status.

Angered by this decision, Madhuri decided to take up a social struggle and threat of resorting to commit suicide. While admitting her changed status, Madhuri, who is also the vice-president of Telugu Nadu Student Federation and also State transgender organisation, submitted a representation to the Rayalaseema University officials seeking a special option under the transgender category.

They wanted her first to write the eligibility test. Madhuri wrote the test and secured 600th rank. However, the varsity maintains that there is a no transgender quota and that there are no guidelines on this issue. “We did not deny seat for her.

But the quota under which she is seeking does not exist in the admission process,” Narasimhulu, Vice-Chancellor of the university clarified. Let her come up with the supporting documents like the government orders and court judgements etc., so that we could discuss with higher authorities and resolve the issue, the V-C assured. The University is willing to offer a seat to Madhuri. The representation was made quoting the Supreme Court judgement seeking a seat under the third gender category.
