Srisailam: Neelam Sanjiva Reddy Multipurpose Project popularly known as Srisailam Reservoir may touch dead storage, if the Krishna Water Board order of releasing 8 tmc for drinking water to the two Telugu-speaking States is implemented. The level in the reservoir has gone down to 802 ft after AP and Telangana used most of the water for generating electricity. AP which had earlier objected to the use of water for generating electricity by the Telangana State also used it for the same purpose.

The successive governments were maintaining the water level at 834 ft. However, with the use of water for power generation, the level is down to 802 ft. If the Krishna Board orders are implemented the water level would stand at 795 ft which is below dead storage. In 2002, the water level had come down to 778 ft.

In that situation Rayalaseema region would be hit severely. The backwaters of the Srisailam reservoir flow to fill the various projects in Rayalaseema through Potireddypadu head regulator. Only if the level reaches 854 ft, water could be released to Rayalaseema projects like Velugodu, Alaganuru, Sunkesula, Gajuladinne, Avuku and others. The total water stored in all these reservoirs is 99 tmc only.

If there are no rains in the upstream States like Maharashtra and Karnataka, farmers of Rayalaseema are likely to face severe drought this year. Water would only be released to Srisailam reservoir once the upstream projects like Almatti, Jurala and Narayanpur reach their full capacity.
