Hyderabad: Despite villagers opposing the proposed port and holding agitations for some time, Andhra Pradesh government seems to be determined to go ahead and acquire lands for Machilipatnam port and proposed industrial hub in its vicinity.

According to sources, the port issue has been taking several twists and turns for the last one decade, and sported several controversies with regard to extent of land to be acquired. But, now, as the port is considered a key component, forming the part of the CRDA Economic and Industrial Agenda, it wanted to go ahead with its move.

“An airport of International standards, metro and rapid rail connectivity, highway and port connectivity is what forms the Economic Eco-system that the government has planned to attract investments to the region. Also, as the road and rail connectivity proposals are picking up momentum, now, it wanted to fast track the Machilipatnam port plan. Because, the government wants to showcase the CRDA and Amaravati of having a global connectivity,” said an official from the planning department.

This in turn would help attracting investments to set up logistics hub and industries of various sorts planned in CRDA. Unlike in the past, post bifurcation, areas identified under the ports’ hinterland are to witness new developments like coming up of new State capital, development of CRDA, and industries planned within the CRDA as well as the Krishna and West Godavari districts.

It was against this backdrop that the government has decided to hand over around 5,323 acres, to Navayuga Group, the contractor of Machilipatnam Port Limited (MPL). The State Infrastructure Development had recommended only 150 acres per berth, and insisted on a cap of not more than a total of 3,600 acres for construction of 24 berths in 2012.

However, once cancelling the land allocation made by the Rosaiah-headed State government, and after much dilly dallying, the Congress government headed by the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy had given its nod initially to provide 4,800 acres, and later handed over 5,323 acres to Navayuga.

Now, the government which had already decided to extend port development agreement for another 36 months wanted to handover the lands at the earliest, and to ensure that the first phase of the port development to be completed around the same time that the first phase of Capital City is completed.
