Visakhapatnam: The north Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam suffered losses to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore in the last year Hudhud cyclone and the relief from various sources amounted to Rs 1,364 crore other than Rs 1,000 crore was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Collector Dr N Yuvaraj told reporters here on Saturday that the State government had spent Rs 364 crore and another Rs 1,000 crore was together spent by GVMC,

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), EDCL and other Public Sector Undertakings.Cyclone relief (Rs 5,000) was extended to each of 5.5 lakh families in the district. In the rural area of the district, 9,000 houses were sanctioned out of which work commenced on 5,000 houses.

In the urban area, 5,100 houses were sanctioned and work began for 2,336 houses.The government is building the houses with an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore, of which Rs 250 crore was given by the donors.

He said an amount of Rs 720 crore would be spent on laying of power cables underground. He said compensation was given to all those who suffered damages to their houses in the district and there was no trace of 600 claimants.

Similarly, Rs 28 lakh was recovered from the people who made false claims, the Collector added.The central government has also agreed to sanction Rs 16 crore under the MPLAD funds for taking up the repair works to the damage caused by the Hudhud.

The World Bank has also agreed to sanction Rs 150 crore for Panchayat Raj department, Rs 106 crore for Roads and Buildings, Rs 350 crore for GVMC, Rs 850 crore for EPDCL and Rs 120 crore for revenue department.

Though the amount was not specified, the World Bank might also sanction funds for beach erosion prevention project. The Collector said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu would participate in the huge rally on the beach road in memory of the Hudhud cyclone and would address a public meeting on October 12.

The Chief Minister would also launch the tree plantation programme, under which five lakh saplings would be planted,
he added.
