Visakhapatnam: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that the universities should run on PPP mode with greater role played by the alumni associations, giving enough indications that are in store in the Private Universities Bill.

Addressing the AU Alumni 2015 meet held at the Convocation Hall here on Monday evening, the Chief Minister said world’s great universities like Stanford have been getting funds from private players who also happen to be the members of alumni associations.

He said Andhra University should also tie up with the industries exchanging knowledge and expertise and the students should spend equal time in classrooms and industries.

He also suggested that the AU should go for collaboration with top universities in the world at least department-wise to gain knowledge and reach the world standards.

Recalling the great Vice-Chancellor Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who later became the President of India, the Chief Minister said the past glory could be achieved with greater determination and help from outside.

Appreciating former student and HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, the Chief Minister said AU has produced great people both in industry like G Mallikarjuna Rao of GMR and others and it was time they paid back.

“I have asked Mallikarjuna Rao to head the three-member committee having local MP and another former AU engineering student Dr K Haribabu as convenor and Ganta Srinivasa Rao as member. They will meet on November 14 and chalk out future action plan,’’ the Chief Minister said.

He announced that Rs 11.5 crore has been pooled for the Alumni funds as of now and the government will give a matching a grant of Rs 13.5 crore to build a good corpus fund.

Speaking on the occasion, Venkaiah Naidu said he felt proud being a student of Andhra University and recalled his political beginning as a student leader. He promised to mobilise Rs 1 crore for the alumni fund.

“I will make serious efforts to make AU a centre of excellence and try to get funds from the UGC,’’ Venkaiah Naidu said.
Chairman of GMR Group, G Mallikarjuna Rao, said most of the foreign universities are funded by the alumni groups and it was time AU sourced funds from the former students.

HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao said alumni would plan to provide one seat in the university for those who contribute more than Rs 1 crore to the alumni corpus fund.

The Chief Minister felicitated senior most woman professor of Andhra University, 90-year-old S Malleswari, on the occasion.
