Rajahmundry: Arjuna and Dronacharya awardee and the secretary of AP Volleyball Association, Arikapudi Ramana Rao, has said that the failure of the State government to recruit players in its departments, good volleyball players are leaving the State and joining departments like railways and services.

As a result, the State team is turning weak.

He recalled that Andhra Pradesh used to be the leading team in the country having two Dronacharya and five Arjuna Award winners.

Speaking to ‘The Hans India’, Ramana Rao lamented that the volleyball was lagging behind in the State due to lack of funding. The governments were not spending on the sport for the last 10 years. “Only associations are accumulating money to conduct coaching camps and championships,” he said.

He stressed the need for encouragement for the sport from the school-level and wondered why the schools are not encouraging volleyball, which is the cheapest sport in comparison with other sports.

He maintained that hardly 10 teams were playing volleyball from all the universities in Andhra Pradesh which was very disappointing. He made it clear that participation of number of teams would enhance the quality and bring good results. He recalled that no university from the State represented in All India Inter-University Championship.

Ramana Rao who is also the instructor of Federation Internationale De Volleyball said that lack of recruitment of coaches was also hampering the prospects of the sport. He informed that there were hardly four coaches in all the 13 districts. However, he mentioned that AP was regaining its glory. “It is now within the eighth rank in the country,” he said.

By observing that sports would lessen unrest in youth, he stressed the need for support and encouragement from the government as well as from schools.
