Vijayawada: The State government issued a GO on Sunday to purchase paddy damaged or discoloured due to cyclone and heavy rains in November in all the rain affected districts. AP State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (APASCSCL) will soon start purchasing the same.

Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies Department issued GO No 26 to purchase paddy, which was discoloured or damaged up to 10 per cent. It may be noted that paddy was damaged to a large extent due to heavy rains in East and West Godavari districts in November.

In the GO released, the Commissioner of Civil Supplies informed that the relaxations are restricted to the proportion of affected paddy to the tune of 2.37 lakh tons in East Godavari district and 2.59 lakh tons in West Godavari district, with respect to kharif crop.

“It is estimated that the additional expenditure involved in purchasing the discolored paddy without cut is Rs 36 crore and the department requested the State government to release the additional funds for procurement of discolored paddy. The Collectors of East Godavari and West Godavari districts are asked to ensure that the APSCSCL procures the affected paddy apart from arranging wide publicity,” the GO read

Reacting to the GO issued by State government, V Subba Rao General Secretary of AP Rythu Sangham demanded that the government should purchase paddy up to 25 per cent damage to help the farmers. “The State government should not reduce the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the paddy and the purchasing centres should be opened in all mandals. The government should pay farmers immediately after purchasing paddy,” he added
