Kakinada: Dr V S Prasad, former director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) called upon the educational institutions to improve quality of higher education.

Delivering a keynote address at an awareness programme on NAAC recognition to colleges organised at JNTU here on Sunday, Prasad explained the importance of self and external quality evaluation, promotion and sustenance initiatives to improve the quality of education.

Detailing about the mission of NAAC, the former director spoke about periodic assessment and accreditation of institutions of higher education by specific academic programmers through projects. He also explained in detail on how to stimulate the academic environment for promotion of quality teaching, learning and research in higher education institutions.

“NAAC encourages self-evaluation, accountability, autonomy and innovations in higher education. It also develops core values such as contribution to national development, fostering of global competence among students. Apart from this, NAAC fosters a value-based system of development among students in promoting use of technology and for excellence in recognised educational institutions,” he added.

The former director of NAAC called for “drastic action” to reform the way education is being imparted in universities and institutes of higher learning in the country to make the country a global centre for education and to make higher studies more relevant to current needs of the country.

He said quality, affordability, and accessibility should become the mainstay of the country’s higher education system. He also asked teachers to update themselves with the latest information in their respective academic fields. “Our universities and institutes must encourage and facilitate their teachers’ participation in international seminars, refreshers courses and project work,” he added.

Vice-Chancellor of JNTU-K Prof. V S S Kumar, who presided over the programme interacted with the directors, principals of constituent colleges and heads of various departments. He explained the guidelines on the submission of NAAC applications.

Rector of the varsity B Prabhakara Rao, Registrar G V V Prasad Raju, Director of Academic Planning K Padma Raju and others took part in the programme.
