Renowned danseuse Manju Bhargavi underlined the need for promoting and protecting the aesthetic beauty of the centuries old dance form-Kuchipudi to the next generations.

The classical dancer was in the city to participate in the two-day Amaravati Nirtyotsav organised by the Natraj Music and Dance Academy at Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao Government Music and Dance College. Talking to newsmen here on Sunday, Manju Bhargavi said that many children were keen to become a Kuchipudi artiste and hence it was the responsibility of the gurus to ensure qualitative training. She said that earlier Kuchipudi artistes face severe hardships to highlight the dance form in reach of people. But now, the facilities had improved offering a wide scope for the children to perform the art across the globe. The State government, which committed to develop and conserve the popular dance form, should focus on primarily providing shelter and space for the artistes, instead of developing it as a tourist spot. A channel should be launched by the State government for the promotion of the iconic dance form both at home and abroad, she opined.

She wanted the State government to form a committee with the exponents in Kuchipudi art form and take their opinions into consideration for protecting the art. Initiative should be taken by the government in introducing the Kuchipudi art form in primary education and also to generate employment for the traditional dance teachers. “As of now, I am exploring all possibilities to make a documentary on Kuchipudi art form to bring the excitement among the youth,” she said.
