“Conviction rate is not encouraging”, confessed Commissioner of Police Amit Garg. Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, he said a large number of cases were being settled in mega and regular Lok Adalats.
However, the copies of judgments were being examined and if mistakes were found with the investigating officers or those officers directly responsible, action would be initiated.
The commissioner took pride in reduction of number of cases this year. Giving details about the cases, the commissioner said 5,305 cases were reported this year under all heads of IPC compared to 5,378 in 2014 and 5,266 in 2013.
Similarly, incidence of grave property crime was registered at 126 this year compared to 134 cases last year and 785 law and order cases were reported this year compared to 716 last year and 697 in 2013.
He said 22 murder cases were registered compared to 36 last year and 26 in 2013. Regarding crime against women, 692 cases were reported as against 604 last year and 717 in 2013. Dowry deaths were 6,11 last year and 10 took place in 2013.
Women harassment cases were 355 this year, which was same last year, and 495 in 2013. The commissioner said there was increase in white collar crime rate this year compared to previous years. Around 563 cases were registered this year compared to 455 last year and 358 in 2013.
Much to the relief of the police, no dacoity case was reported this year though nine were reported last year and five in 2013.
On call money racket, the police chief said 43 cases were booked and 18 persons were taken into custody.
Among the innovate measures taken up this year, the commissioner said jail release monitoring system has been introduced to keep track of criminals and their activities after they were released on bail. Once they are released, all the police officials concerned would get SMSes to keep tabs on the criminals.
A proposal has been sent to the government to increase the traffic stations from seven to 13, two more traffic divisions and one law and order division. The Cyber wing has become a full-fledged station and an amount of Rs 2 crore has been sought to set up a digital laboratory.
