New Delhi: Did the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) authorities plan to pull out of Andhra Pradesh and relocate battalion elsewhere recently?

The answer is yes going by what the sources disclosed here. The combined Andhra Pradesh, it seems had allocated land to the NDRF for its expansion plans in the State, but failed to provide the same for about three years.

The NDRF authorities, who had included the plans in their budget, had even got funds allotted for the same. However, when the TDP Government decided to cancel the same and issued a notification to this effect, the miffed NDRF authorities warned the Chief Minister that they did not mind relocating their Mangalagiri battalion elsewhere.

A permanent NDRF battalion comprising 1,149 personnel is stationed at Mangalagiri in Guntur district to provide round-the-clock rescue and relief operations during natural calamities that will also ensure speedy deployment of rescue teams to coastal areas during natural calamities or disasters.

In fact, it was from this centre that the NDRF rushed rescue and relief teams to Chennai in the recent floods too. When the NDRF conveyed its decision of relocation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu asked Chief Secretary I Y R Krishna Rao, to resolve the issue and the latter got back to the NDRF Director-General with a promise of a fresh allocation of 100 acres of land for its expansion plans.

This prevented the NDRF from moving shop to another State. However, there is still a hurdle that is preventing the NDRF from going ahead with its expansion. It seems there are some encroachments by some villagers in the land allocated in Krishna district and the local authorities have not displayed any will to clear the land from the clutches of the encroachers.
