Vijayawada: The first visit of the NITI Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya to Andhra Pradesh was most disappointing as the meeting with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu failed to provide any clue on the promises to the State like special category status and special package that were promised at the time of bifurcation.

It may be mentioned here that the Union Minister Y S Chowdary claimed that the NITI Aayog team had submitted a report to the Central government recommending special category status for the State. Panagariya visited the capital region on Wednesday and inspected Pattiseema works and interacted with the officials.

His visit raised high expectations among the people as the anticipation was rife that a statement would be made on the special category status. However, the visit was as disappointing as that of the Prime Minister and chairman of the NITI Aayog, Narendra Modi, who visited the State on October 22.

The official statement released by the State government on the visit of Panagariya had no mention of either the Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu discussing the special category status and special packages or Panagariya making any reference to the two promises.

The NITI Aayog vice-chairman had spent around seven hours in the State on Wednesday, including field visit and interaction with the Chief Minister. In the meeting held at CM camp office, Naidu briefed Panagariya on the initiatives of the government to develop the State and sought for Centre’s assistance on developing the State. Stating that the bifurcation has left the State crippled and left people without capital and revenue, CM explained the initiatives like linking of Godavari and Krishna rivers through Pattiseema project. He said that linking of rivers had helped the government to provide water for the Rayalaseema region. He added that the government had overcome the power crisis and had become power surplus.

Naidu averred that Chennai-Visakhapatnam and Chennai-Bengaluru corridors have come as a blessing for the State and the two corridors would help in the development. The CM said that the government was planning to develop Gangavaram, Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports, besides others and make the State the gateway for the eastern countries. He appealed to the NITI Aayog vice chairman to support the State in all these efforts.

Later, Panagariya gave a power point presentation to the Chief Minister, Ministers and officials of the State on the development initiatives of South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and China.

He said that China’s development rate remained at 10 per cent from 1981 to 2013 because of its shift to manufacturing sector. He said India too is ahead in industrial and service sectors recording growth.

Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu, Chief Secretary I Y R Krishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary, S P Tucker, Finance Secretary P V Ramesh, AP planning commission vice chairman Kutumba Rao and others were also present.
