Anantapur: State CPI secretary K Ramakrishna on Thursday expressed distress over members of the AP Working Journalists’ Union (APUWJ) taking to streets for focussing attention on their demands.

Ramakrishna said he would write to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on the issue in 2016. He pledged support to the APUWJ agitation. Members of APUWJ district unit continued their indefinite fast for the second day. They burnt effigies of Ministers Palle Raghunath Reddy and Kamineni Srinivas at Clock Tower Circle to register their protest against the government’s indifference to demands, like issue of accreditation /health cards.

Ramakrishna visited the hunger strike camp near the RDO’s office along with party leaders C Jafar, Lingamayya, Narayanaswamy and Raja Reddy. He criticised the government for not meeting journalists’ minimum needs and failing to release matching grants for the health scheme.

He said journalists faced a serious problem of house sites; either the government should sanction house sites or construct houses under a new scheme, besides implementing accident insurance cover.

APUWJ district unit president M Ramalinga Reddy warned that the members would not hesitate to lay siege to Ministers’ houses if the government continued to be indifferent. The fast was called off after IJU member G Prabhakar Naidu offered lime juice to protestors.
