Eluru: Will the cock fights be stopped or will they continue? This is the million dollar question now as the High Court on Thursday made it clear that there should be no cockfights in Andhra Pradesh, whether or not it is the festival season.

Cock fight rings are being arranged at various places. The local TDP and BJP leaders have come with an explanation that there would be no betting this time around. But the rings would be auctioned and the money received from the auctions would be spent for village development. The leaders said that it was a sport and part of culture in Andhra.

The High Court, they claimed, has asked the police to maintain status quo and no betting should be done on the cockfight. Hence there is no total ban, they averred. With Sankranti fast approaching, hectic arrangements are on at the ground level for conducting the events.

It is estimated that about 500 big and small rings have been prepared in various parts of the district, particularly in the Delta area of Narsapuram division. It is estimated that during the 3-day festivities about Rs 200 crore-odd cash will exchange hands on the cockfighting contests.

Meanwhile, the police have filed about 250 bind-over cases against the habitual cock-fight organisers. AI Bhimavaram, a small village in Akiveedu mandal, where the President of India had recently inaugurated a Veda Patashala is known for organising cock fights.

Enthusiasts from as far as Chennai and Bangalore turn up to the event. The organisers have already constructed VIP galleries to watch the fights. Besides AI Bhimavaram village, the cock fights will also be held at Prakruti Ashram in Bhimavaram town, Vempa village in Bhimavaram mandal.

Mahadevapatnam, Juvvalapalem in Kalla mandal, Srinivasapuram in Jangareddigudem mandal, Dharmajigudem in Lingapalem Mandal, Koppaka, Duggirala, Kokkirapadu, and Naidugudem in Denduluru constituency are caught in the web of betting mania.

The organisers can be seen taking the roosters for a swim early in the morning in a special pond. After that these roosters walk a while. At 9 am they are served with cashews, almonds, meat and other protein-rich food. In the afternoon they are fed with cereals. They are sprayed with water laced with high potency vitamins in the evening. This food costs from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 to one rooster per day.
