Tirupati: Police took 60 activists of CPM and CPI into custody when they tried to march towards Nehru Municipal School grounds where Chief Minister was scheduled to participate in third phase of the Janmabhoomi-Maa Vooru programme here on Thursday.The activists, who gathered at Bhavani Nagar Circle were rounded up by the police before they could proceed in a rally towards the school grounds to submit a memorandum on the plethora of problems faced by the people in the city and also on the pending applications for sanction of house sites, ration cards and pensions.

The activists, raising slogans against the government, tussled with the police, who tried to move them away in vehicles. After a high drama of 30 to 45 minutes at the busy junction in the peak morning hours, the police took the activists into custody and shifted them in vehicles to East and MR Palli police stations in the city.

The CPI activists including city secretary C Penchalaiah, Auto workers Union leader Murali and others, who were detained in East police station, were released later. While the CPM activists including party district secretary K Kumar Reddy were let off from MR Palli police station in the evening only after the departure of the Chief Minister from the city after completing his six-hour official visit to participate in the Janmabhoomi programme organised by the Tirupati Municipal Corporation and also to hold a review meeting with district officials.

Meanwhile, CPI district secretary and CPM district secretariat member V Nagaraj, in separate press releases, have condemned the police preventing the Left parties from submitting petition to the Chief Minister in the official programme. They alleged that the TDP government has been exploiting the Janmabhoomi programme to boost up the Chief Minister’s image at the cost of public money. The Left leaders slammed the ruling government for trying to stifle the voice of opposition parties for exposing the fruitless Janmabhoomi.
