Visakhapatnam: Joint secretary in the department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Ravneet Kaur has said the purpose of Make in India programme is to make India a major player in the global supply chain, while addressing at the plenary session on ‘Make in India; Drafting India’s global manufacturing strategy’ on the penultimate day of the three-day CII Partnership Summit here on Monday.

Kaur said India had moved very significantly in this direction and the major drive has been in fostering innovation, enhancing skills, protecting intellectual property and manufacturing infrastructure. Simultaneously, the idea was to create jobs, she added.

“We have moved from 142 to 130 rank in ease of doing business which is recognition of the fact that India is going ahead,” she pointed out and added that Andhra Pradesh is ranked no. 2 in India. A portal e-Biz was developed which has two visitors and a subscriber base of 5,000.

She sid the process was simplified and was taken from red tape to red carpet and all the queries are responded within 72 hours. She also referred to the increase in FDI in several sectors including railways and medical devices.

“We have achieved 38 per cent FDI growth in 2014-15 from 2012-14,” she stated. Kishore Jayaraman, president-India and South Asia, Rolls Royce India Pvt. Ltd., said the contribution had to be not only in service sector but also in manufacturing to make India successful.

Former US Ambassador and International Affairs Advisor to Boggs LLP, USA, Frank G Wisner, chief executive of Lockheed Martin in India, Phil Shaw and Managing Director of Foxconn India Development Ltd., Josh Foulger participated in the panel discussion which was chaired by Srini Srinivasan, Managing Director of Hospira, a Pfizer company.
