Guntur: The CPI would make efforts for the emergence of a Left and Democratic Front which will be an alternative to Congress and BJP parties. Unless the Congress changes its pro-rich economic policies, the question of inclusion of Congress in the front will not arise.

Already an alliance of 6 Left parties is in place and the party would work with the alliance to launch joint struggles throughout the country. The party has also stitched up local alliances in some States including Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Left leader Shameem Faizee says it will focus on regaining power in Kerala and West Bengal.

Addressing a press conference at the party office on the conclusion of the 3-day CPI National Council meeting which also happens to be the 90th party anniversary celebrations here on Sunday, CPI General Secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy said that since general elections are still far away, the National Council has decided to focus on Assembly elections to five States and also on gearing up party workers and people for people's struggles against issues like price rise, intolerance, farmers suicides and other issues against the Narendra Modi government.

Sudhakar Reddy said already there is anti-government mood among the people against the BJP-led government at the Centre as the latter is pursuing anti-farmer, anti-industry and anti-common people and communal policies.

The poor and the middle class are highly discontent with the government. He also found fault with the Haryana State government for making a law which prohibits illiterate people from contesting local body elections without a minimum of V and VIII standard respectively for contesting the Panchayat and municipal elections.

The party also regretted the upholding of the law by the Supreme Court. Reddy said that he could see a ploy behind the move by the government to distance the Dalits and Girijans from democracy. He also regretted that meaningful debates were not taking place in Parliament on issues that are affecting the common people and also the farmers’ suicides.

National Secretariat committee member Shameem Faizee said that the National Council also decided to raise party fund of Rs 25 crore from the people to fund its struggles for the people in the job of gearing up the people and lead movements against the ruling governments at the Centre and in the States.
