Eluru: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code are continuing in the trouble-torn Pattikollalanka village in Eluru rural mandal for the consecutive second day on Saturday.

It may be recalled that in the group clashes between two groups from Thursday night to Friday morning, one person was killed and five persons injured. The clashes took place between two groups in the village over fish tanks issue, which started two years ago.

Former Sarpanch Ghantasala Mahalakshmi Raju group and his rival group have been clashing for two years on the lease amount of 1,000 acres of fish tanks in the village.

As Mahalakshmi Raju had complained to the forest officials that out of the 1,000 acres of the land 356 acres were under plus five contour of Kolleru lake, which falls under the Bird Sanctuary. With this, the fisheries department officials started raids on the village.

The rival group in the village alleged that the forest officials were raiding and harassing them. They alleged that even nine mandals were under the plus-five contour, the forest officials had been raiding their village at the instance of former sarpanch Mahalakshmi Raju. They complained the matter to district officials several times and sat on hunger strike over two months in the village as well as at Eluru Collectorate.

During last two years, frequent clashes took place in the village resulting in injuries to several people. Even a police picket was set up in the village. The clashes continued in the village.

The clashes reached flashpoint on Thursday midnight leading to death of a 58-year-old person, Mungara Kondalu and injuring five people, including brother of former sarpanch Mahalakshmiraju.

The situation in Pattikollalanka village is now grim. The villagers’ fear of further attacks in the village, even a police platoon with 30 members deployed to maintain law and order.

The police officials here said that a case has been registered against 159 persons for alleged attack that lead to killing of one person and injuring five persons.

Already 49 persons were in their custody, the police revealed. Meanwhile, Mala Mahanadu State president Karem Sivaji on Saturday visited the Government Hospital. He consoled the injured people in the hospital.

After consoling the injured, Sivaji told reporters that officials had failed to settle the long-pending problem in Pattikollalanka village. He demanded the police to register cases under SC/ST Atrocities Act against the culprits who killed and injured the Dalits in the village. Later, he went to Collectorate to submit a memorandum to the Collector. However, the police force at the Collectorate obstructed his entry.

Accompanied with villagers, he immediately squatted in front of the Collectorate protesting against the police action. Karem Sivaji along with villagers of Pattikollanka were at the Collectorate gate and continuing the agitation. He said that he just wanted to submit a memorandum to the Collector on the village issue and the police were objecting for his entry into the Collectorate. It was not correct on the part of police, he said.
