Tirupati: Minister for Forest and Environment Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy on Sunday launched the 144 km long Handri-Niva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) Kuppam sub-canal works at a meeting at Appinapalli village in Peddapanjani mandal in Chittoor district.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that Rs 468 crore works, which will be completed in nine months, is aimed at providing drinking water to four lakh population in eight mandals in Kuppam and Palamaner constituencies.

This apart, the sub-canal also provides water to 110 tanks for stabilisation of 6,300 acres of ayacut under the tanks for the benefit of farmers in these mandals, he said. The works include 144 km long sub-canal from Appinapalli to Paramasamudram in Kuppam mandal. From Paramasamudram water will be supplied to eight mandals through lift irrigation, he said.

The sub-canal will draw two tmc of water from HNSS project, including supply of water to tanks (0.5 tmc), drinking water supply (0.06 tmc) and for future requirements (0.09 tmc).

The Minister said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on ensuring water supply to all the tanks in the district for agriculture. Chittoor ZillaParishad chairperson Geervani, MLC G Srinivasulu and others were present.
