Kurnool: Deputy Chief Minister K E Krishnamurthy observed here on Thursday that road accidents can be prevented if people observed traffic rules, as over-speed, negligent attitude and human errors are found to be causing them.

Speaking as the chief guest at the concluding session of the 27th Road Safety Week celebrations, he stressed that everyone should following traffic regulations as their ‘social responsibility’ and to avert highway mishaps.

Krishnamurthy stated that the national, State and rural highway network in the district was spread over 3,802 km. There were 4.44 lakh motorcycles and 23,000 cars. Drivers of the vehicles should be alert by adopting traffic rules, as one person was getting killed every three minutes.

He said such deaths included two-wheeler drivers not wearing helmet. Most mishaps were occurring because of over-crowding in autorickshaws, negligent driving and use of improper licences. Deaths on roads could be averted by using seat belts and helmets. The Deputy CM expressed anguish that people were only reading about traffic rules but not implementing them. Hence, there was a need for both the police and Transport department to create awareness in colleges among students on traffic regulations, so as to present highway accidents.

Legislative Council Chairman Chakrapani stressed the need for starting road safety concept right from homes. He advised Deputy Transport Commissioner Meera Prasad to create public awareness on the need for evolving an accident-free set-up. Zilla Parishad Chairman Mallela Rajasekhar called for cooperation of college managements and Transport department for creating awareness on traffic rules.

Kurnool MLA S V Mohan Reddy expressed anxiety over loss of precious lives in accidents, despite many preventive laws. He called upon the government to introduce latest technology for averting road mishaps. Reddy pleaded for higher budge allocation for this purpose.
Panyam MLA Gowru Charita Reddy said as over-speeding was one of the main reasons for road accidents people should observe traffic rules.

Meera Prasad said Road Safety Week celebrations were being organised since 1998 for creating awareness among drivers and road-users.
