Nellore: Railway passengers, who reserve tickets at Mee Seva centre near city bus stand and at post offices in AK Nagar and Vidyanagar in Vakadu mandal would have to pay additional service charges for every transaction from Thursday onwards. District Joint Collector gave approval for collection of additional charges as per revised guidelines of the Indian Railways.
There are two main railway stations and a stop for passenger trains in the city. Main railway station is located on northern end of the city and Vedayapalem railway station is at southern end of the city. A halt for passenger trains is at Ramalingapuram railway station.
The South Central Railway arranged ticket reservation counters at the main station long back and it is the only source for booking tickets from 8 am to 8 pm. Vedayapalem station also has a reservation counter but it only works for 2 hours without specific timings. People prefer to reserve tickets at Vedayapalem as several parts of the city are close to this railway station. With booking facility confined to 2 hours, people are forced to travel at least 7 to 8 km to book tickets from main railway station or opt for online booking. Despite modernising railway station at Vedayapalem by spending crores of rupees but full-fledged reservation counters were not in operational.
As part of the revised reservation policy, state governments are not entitled to get commission on transactions where railway reservation counters are not managed Indian Railways but they are allowed to collect additional charges from the passengers. As per the revised charges, passengers will have to pay additionally Rs 15 for sleeper or second sitting, Rs 20 for 3-AC and AC chair car, Rs 30 for first class, first and second AC and Rs 10 for cancellation of ticket besides standard deductions by the Indian Railways.
Further, many cities across the state were having additional counters at RTC bus stands and other places manned by railway staff members where additional charges are not collected from the passengers. In Visakhapatnam too, there are several such counters being run by the East Coast Railway for the benefit of passengers.
Even though, Nellore city is having around 6 lakh population, they need to rely only on official counters at Mee Seva centre near city bus stand and at post offices in AK Nagar and Vidyanagar in Vakadu mandal. These counters would collect additional charges from the passengers from Thursday onwards.
