Chittoor: City residents are shying away from children’s park which is located in the heart of the city due to lack of facilities. The park was founded in 1998 and it is being run by the Forest department. Negligence in maintenance of park by corporation officials said to be the main reason for parents not taking their children to the recreational spot. It is the only one park for entire city population.

In the initial years, the Forest department has set up playing equipment like slides, see-saw, swings, circle row and ladders for the children. Parents used to take their children for this park during Sundays and holidays so that they can socialise with other children. Now, they are not willing to take their children as playing equipment need repairs.

Even, the park lacks basic facilities like drinking water for visitors and toilets for women. Parents are scared to bring their children to the park due to monkey menace. Park is not having patronage from residents as there are no buses from all parts of the city. Earlier, B V Reddy Group of Industries has come with a proposal for developing the park on par with international standards but they have dropped their plans for unknown reasons.

According to official information, the Forest authorities have proposed to lay cycling tracks and erect watchtowers. The forest officials also planned to take up avenue plantation and measures for improving greenery in the park. To make park more attractive for children, officials have proposed tree top houses and sign boards for creating awareness on environment.

Besides, they want to improve basic facilities and provide public conveyance. It is learnt that proposals have been forwarded to higher officials in the Forest department for approval. The officials concerned are planning to develop it as Biodiversity Park.
