Eluru: The Eluru Municipal Corporation has finally woken up from its deep slumber and began works to clean the Krishna-Eluru canal on Monday evening.

It may be recalled here that The Hans India had published about the deplorable condition of the Krishna-Eluru canal on January 27 in these very columns.

Following this, the Commissioner has earlier directed the public health officials to take necessary steps to prevent the dumping of garbage and plastic waste in the canal.

The Municipal Commissioner Y Sai Srikanth, along with Municipal Health Officer Dr Surya Rao, visited the canal on Monday evening, and directed the health inspectors and workers to remove the garbage from the canal. The Commissioner and health officer supervised the work at Vasantha Mahal centre.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner requested the shopkeepers, hoteliers not to dump the waste in the canal, as it is used for drinking water purposes. He lamented that besides garbage, people are throwing dead animals also in the canal. He also said people along the bund Tammileru rivulet in the city were also dumping the
waste in the rivulet. “They have to stop the dumping of waste immediately,” he warned.

The Commissioner said four Sanitary Inspectors would supervise the canal bund in the city, and they would identify the offenders who throw garbage and waste material in the canal. The guilty would face huge fines. The cleaning programme would continue for over one week. Sanitary Inspectors Balakrishna and Satyanarayana were also present.
