Visakhapatnam: Poeple living in Dondapudi, a remote village under Ravikamatam Mandal in Visakhapatnam district, could be highest consumers of the power being supplied by APEPDCL. This was proved when a two-member family living in a single-room thatched house, like many other families, was jolted after receiving a bill of over Rs 18 lakh, for consuming power for the month of January.

House owner 60-year-old Gothina Demullamma was still in a state of shock after receiving the power bill. The woman along with her son has been living in the thatched house using two bulbs and a fan. They use the fan seldom and bulbs for a few hours in the evening. “I am a poor woman and the richest of the village never got a power bill exceeding Rs 1500,’’ Demulamma said and added her regular bill never crossed Rs 90 which she has been paying for several years.

As usual she went to the Mee-Seva centre recently to pay the electricity bill and handed over a Rs 100 note to the counter clerk. The clerk, after checking her bill laughed off and returned the Rs 100 note saying her bill was around Rs 18 lakh. As per the bill, this two-member poor family consumed around two crore units during the one month period.

Demullamma approached officials of APEPDCL and told them her inability to pay the Rs 18 lakh bill. When enquired, Assistant Engineer of EPDCL, Ravikamatham, G Swami said there could be some error with the software that prepares the consumers’ bill. The issue had come to their notice and it is being looked into, he said.
