Nellore: With eleven thermal projects with 15,800 MW capacity have been sanctioned for Nellore, which is the highest in the entire country, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that Nellore would be made a power hub in the country.

Nellore as a power hub would make Andhra Pradesh self sufficient in power sector, Naidu said. The Chief Minister was addressing at a programme organized by AP Genco at Nelaturu in Muthukur mandal on Saturday in connection with dedication of 2X800 power plants to the nation that were already operational and laying foundation for the third unit in the premises. The Chief Minister also attended the opening ceremony at SembCorp supercritical power unit.

“The Union government strongly supported the truncated state for providing 24X7 power supply. Small-scale industries suffered a lot and closed their shops, youngsters lost their employment, no adequate water for drinking and agriculture needs. We assure people that there would be no power cuts and ensure quality supply in future.

Transmission losses were also significantly reduced and would attain more growth,” the Chief Minister claimed. He appealed to the Union government for providing smart meters for 1.3 crore families each costs around Rs 2,000 to be supplied to each household for monitoring at all levels on status of power consumption status addressing difficulties in supply.

Criticising the Congress government for neglecting power woes of people, the Chief Minister said that he had requested the Centre to include AP in UDAY (Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana) Programme to be relieved from the power-related problems.

Explaining that the distribution companies were facing losses of Rs 14,000 crore, he said coal-based power generation has been taken up in the state. The state government would encourage using other natural resources such as hydel, solar and wind power.

“Though we are planning to make the state a model one with path-breaking reforms opposition parties are criticizing at national and state level. You know well about what opposition party in AP is doing. We have a concrete action plan to build a strong state. We are number one in power generation, energy efficiency and many others,” said Naidu.
