The deficit is estimated at Rs 4347.39 crore. 

Vijayawada: The Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL) has decided to generate additional revenue of Rs 488.39 crore by raising power tariff in eight districts under its jurisdiction in the financial year 2016-17. The SPDCL has estimated its revenue at Rs 14,572.8 crore and the expenditure at Rs 18,920 crore in 2016-17. The deficit is estimated at Rs 4347.39 crore.

The State government is giving subsidy of Rs 3,859.04 crore for the financial year 2016-17. SPDCL chairman and managing director H Y Dora told the public hearing conducted by Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission at the Siddhartha auditorium here on Wednesday said the discom had proposed the tariff hike to recover the deficit.

The Andhra Pradesh ERC Chairman Justice G Bhavani Prasad presided over the public hearing. Two members of the commission, Pervela Raghu and Pendyala Rama Mohan, took part. Representatives of NGOs, farmers, industrialists, leaders of various political parties raised objections to the proposed hike of tariff.

Dora said the SPDCL was covering eight districts in south coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema and providing services with headquarters at Tirupati. He said the SPDCL had proposed to sell 33,809 million units of power in 2016-17 and the expected revenue was Rs 14,572 crore.

Referring to expenses, the CMD said the estimated expenditure is Rs 18,920 crore. He said the DCL has said power purchasing costs would be Rs 15,380 crore, interest on security deposits Rs 167.45 crore, distribution expenses Rs 2,383.14 crore, supply cost Rs 648.35 crore, network and other charges and 3297 crore, besides others.

He said as against the total needs of Rs 18,920 crore towards expenses, the discom would get only 14,572 crore revenue.
The CMD said discom proposes to supply 33,809 million units in 2016-17. Of this, 8,914 million units would be supplied to industries, 10,500 million units to agriculture and irrigation, 7,953 MU to domestic sector, 1,763 MU for commercial and non-domestic purposes, 1,813 MU to small scale industries, 537 MU to streetlights and drinking water.

The discom sold 29,484 MU in 2015-16 and is planning to sell 33,484 MU in 2016-17, an increase of 14 per cent compared to last year, Dora added. He said the SPDCL was trying to recover the deficit incurred during the two previous financial years through the Central government schemes.

Meanwhile, CPM and CPI protested at the public hearing on the proposals of the discom to hike power tariff and generate additional revenue of Rs 488 crore. CPM State committee member Ch Baburao, CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar and others took part. Congress leader and former MLA Malladi Vishnu also submitted a representation asking the SPDCL to withdraw the proposal to increase power tariff saying it will impose a huge burden on the consumers.
