Vijayawada: Members of Federation of Andhra Pradesh Teachers Organisations (FAPTO) launched a week-long relay protest near Alankar Theatre here on Wednesday, demanding that the State government should upgrade PET and pandit posts, implement service rules and withdraw Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao participated in the strike and extended his solidarity to FAPTO. Addressing the gathering, he said that the Minister for Human Resource Development Ganta Srinivasa Rao should take up initiative measures in formulating unified service rules to fill the vacant teacher posts for strengthening the education system in the State.

No measures were taken by the Minister in implementing pay revision commission for the teachers and other additional benefits like pension and gratuity to the retired teachers, he alleged. "Focus should be laid by the government in improving basic amenities at the schools, instead of establishing cluster schools which would detrimental to the interests of the rural students," he said.

FAPTO chairman Katti Narasimha Reddy said that taking series of agitations in consideration, the State government invited the members of FAPTO on January 27 for a discussion over the 23 demands. Though the principal secretaries of human resource department responded positively the demands of the organisation failed to provide an assurance for its implementation.

An rationalisation committee was also conveyed by the government over the issue, which did not considered the major demand of making amendments to the GO’s 55 and 61 issued regarding the staff patron in high schools, he said. "We will continue our agitation until the State government invites us to participate in second phase of discussion over the genuine demands of the organisation," he added.

The APUTF State president I Venkateswara Rao, general secretary P Babu Reddy, State Teacher ‘s Union (STU) general secretary Suddher Babu, Democratic Teachers Federation (DTF) State president Krishanaih and others were also present at the relay strike camp.
