Vijayawada: Markfed earned a profit of Rs 3.49 crore in 2014-15, according to Markfed chairman Kanchi Rama Rao. Addressing the Andhra Pradesh Markfed second annual general body meeting here on Sunday, Rama Rao said that the Markfed was extending services to farmers of the State through 996 co-operative societies.

He said that Markfed has been supplying fertilisers to farmers through primary agricultural co-operative services and added that fertilisers worth Rs 332 crore were distributed through Markfed in 2015-16. The chairman said that Markfed has been playing the role of market intervention to prevent increase in prices.

While private traders are offering pulses at lower price to farmers and selling at high prices to customers, Markfed purchased the pulses by providing a supportive price to farmers and sold them in the open market at a reasonable price. The chairman said that the Markfed has been making efforts to improve cold storages to provide storage facility to agricultural products to get remunerative prices to farmers.

The general body decided to appeal to the government for waiving off loans to bail out Markfed from crisis. The meeting also decided to amend the by-law to increase the capital fund. Markfed Managing Director G S R K R Vijaykumar and others were present in the meeting.
