Visakhapatnam: Deep-sea fishing is being promoted by the Department of Fisheries for the first time by providing financial help to 74 mechanised boat owners with a unit cost of Rs 3 lakh each to ensure scientific fishing in the deep-sea replacing traditional methods.

Of the total Rs 3 lakh unit cost, the boat owner was given a subsidy of Rs 1.5 lakh and the remaining was their contribution. Under the deep-sea fishing project, the mechanised boat owners were given quality nets, ropes, SS hooks and sea anchor with which catch will be ensured.

All this material was procured from approved dealers through tendering method and all the 74 boat owners were happy with the catch, as they earned Rs 2 lakh on an average in each venture. When contacted, assistant director of fisheries department P Koteswara Rao told The Hans India that the deep-sea fishing project has been successfully utilised by the boat owners here and plans are afoot to extend the project to the remaining
mechanised boat owners.

Modern fish markets:

Koteswara Rao informed that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on the uplift of fishermen and sanctioned a sum of Rs 4.3 crore for construction of a modern fish market either at the government vacant site at MVP Colony or at some other area in the city limits.

Of the total amount sanctioned, he said that the State government share is Rs 1.74 crore, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) share Rs 1.7 crore and the balance would be given by the district administration.

“It was also proposed to build another modern and hygienic fish market in front of the Fishing Harbour with a cost of Rs 2.7 crore replacing the existing market inside the Fishing Harbour. The government is yet to sanction funds to this proposed market,” he explained.

The assistant director said as part of improvement of existing fish markets, renovation would be taken up at Dandubazar, Sriharipuram, Nehrunagar and a new market at Gopalapatnam in urban limits for which the government will sanction Rs 15 lakh each.

Similarly, new markets would be constructed at Atchyutapuram, Bhimunipatnam and Narsipatnam in rural district for which Rs 7.5 lakh each will be sanctioned. Already, construction work was commenced at Narsipatnam and Atchyutapuram and the works will be completed in a couple of months, he added.
