Vijayawada: The Left parties here on Tuesday organised a huge ‘Chalo Vijayawada’ rally by taking out a procession from Tummalapalli Kalashektram demanding that the TDP government provide housing facility for all the eligible across the State.

The procession headed by CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna and CPM State secretary P Madhu passed through main thoroughfares of the city including Mahatma Gandhi Road, Eluru Road, Gandhi Nagar and culminated in a meeting at Gymkhana grounds.

Addressing the gathering, CPM State secretary P Madhu came down heavily on the TDP government for its inefficiency in providing alternative housing facility for the people residing on canal bunds. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who promised to provide houses to the poor had conveniently ignored it and instead he was issuing orders to demolish the houses in the name of beautification and urbanisation, he alleged. At least now, the TDP government should construct houses and provide registration facility for hill slope residents to protect their interests, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna alleged that the TDP government during its 22-month rule failed to construct a single house for the poor in the State. “About 2,73,324 applications were sent to the government for housing purpose. Of the total 2,73,324 applications, only 3,662 applications were taken into consideration by the government,” he added.

He said that the government was not working in a direction that would solve the problems arising in the urban areas and added that the government was watering down the housing schemes. The government was also cancelling the house sites allotted to the poor, and making false promises that it would make fresh allotments, he said. He said that the poor were facing hardship due to steep rise in house rents.

CPI (M) State secretariat member Ch Babu Rao, State executive committee member Y Venkateswara Rao, CPI State assistant secretary Muppala Nageswara Rao, AITUC National secretary G Obulesu, Former MLC Jelli Wilson, CPI (ML) New Democracy leader P Prasad and other leaders took part in the rally.
