Hyderabad: The issue of Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) of displaced persons under Polavaram Irrigation Project triggered a heated debate between the Treasury and Opposition benches in the State Assembly on Saturday. Raising the issue during Question Hour, the Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy alleged that the government had failed to implement the R&R package properly and demanded that the government take a team of MLAs to the site to study the ground situation. He said that it was unfortunate that the affected families were protesting till date. Similarly, the problems of tribals were not addressed, he alleged.

He further said that the government was mounting pressure on the villagers of Ramaiah Peta, Pydipaka and Chegondipalli to vacate their houses. Refuting the allegations of Jaganmohan Reddy, Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao said the government was implementing the R&R in letter and spirit.

He said that some political parties including the YSRCP were instigating some of the affected persons and was asking them not to accept the R&R package. He alleged that the YSRCP was sending its partymen to stage and organise protests to create hurdles in the project work but the government was determined to continue the project and would do justice to the affected people.

Earlier, the Minister said as per the Socio-Economic Survey in the area 38,985 families were found as project-affected families in Polavaram submergence area. About 1,497 acres have to be acquired for the project, 297 acres would be provided under land to land as part of the R&R initiative. He also said that the government had implemented the loan waiver scheme benefiting 9,400 persons in the area for which Rs 34.72 crore was released.
