New Delhi: The Centre is all set to intervene in the Polavaram dispute between Andhra Pradesh and Odisha governments as the former "is unwilling to resolve the dispute with its neighbour on its own". This decision was made by the Union Ministry of Water Resources after its repeated reminders to AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in this regard fell on deaf ears.

On the sidelines of a function here, Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharati said the Centre would soon convene a meeting of both the Chief Ministers to resolve the dispute. Assuring the Odisha government that the Centre's commitment to early completion of Polavaram would not affect the interests of Odisha in any way, she said Polavaram would be finished within the deadline.

She said the Centre had so far given Rs 500 crore for the Polavaram project, but it was not much to speed up the works and added that her ministry had written to the Niti Aayog to release Rs 1,600 crore for the project. It may be recalled that Uma Bharati had urged Chandrababu Naidu to meet his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik to sort out the differences, if any, while promising to "intervene if necessary" to help the two States to iron out differences.

The Odisha government has objected to the construction of the project on the ground that the 150-foot high dam will submerge several villages and agricultural lands in that State and displace hundreds of tribal families and others during Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's tenure itself.

Naveen Patnaik had addressed a letter to his Andhra counterpart then voicing his objections to the AP government's decision to go ahead with the execution of the project without consulting Odisha. He sought a review of the entire issue and was understood to have sent a similar letter to the Central Water Commission expressing ire at the clearances given without referring them to his government.

The Union Minister had assured the Odisha MPs that she would ensure justice to Odisha and that its concerns would be addressed without fail.
