The National Maritime Day was celebrated at the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) here on Tuesday with the theme ‘Ease of doing business in the maritime sector’ to help enable public know more about the Indian Shipping Industry and its role in the Indian economy.

Visakhapatnam: The National Maritime Day was celebrated at the Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) here on Tuesday with the theme ‘Ease of doing business in the maritime sector’ to help enable public know more about the Indian Shipping Industry and its role in the Indian economy.

Port Chairman M T Krishna Babu, who was the chief guest, dwelt about the importance of National Maritime Day and the growth of Indian Shipping Industry in the last decade. He informed that the Indian Shipping Industry started its revival on April 5, 1919 with its first steam ship-loyalty sailed into international waters from Mumbai and commenced her memorable voyage across the high seas ushering a new era in the Maritime History of India.

He said that the National Welfare Board for Seafarers, a statutory body, constituted under the Merchant Shipping Act 1958 decided that April 5 is being celebrated as the National Maritime Day. The day is also being celebrated as the Merchant Navy Flag Day, he added.

Deputy Chairman P L Haranath, Surveyor-in-Charge J Mukhopadhaya, Port Trustee K V Krishna Kumar, Principal Surveyor Amit Bhatnagar also spoke. Later, the Chairman distributed prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted on the occasion to the school children.
