Hyderabad: State units of the two national parties in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Congress and BJP, have struck a conflicting note on the issue of redesigning and re-engineering of irrigation projects, including Palamuru Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project.

Congress, BJP Have divided opinion on water projects in AP, Telangana

Talking to The Hans India, TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said that TPCC fully supports the Palamuru Rangareddy project. The Congress party in Telangana, he said, was with the farmers of the state. “We stand for the interests of Telangana. We have no link with the APCC and its views,” he added. But the leader of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council C Ramachandraiah called upon all the parties in AP to come together and oppose the move of TS to take up the proposed projects.

He said if proposed projects on Godavari and Krishna are completed by TS government then AP would not get water even for drinking purposes. The APCC would fight for the rights of the farmers of the state, he said.Interestingly, the TBJP also opposed the views of the AP BJP leaders.

TBJP senior leader and MLC N Ramachandra Rao said that they were very much in favour of Palamuru Rangareddy project and was keen that it should be completed in time. He, however, said that it was the duty of the Telangana government to clarify the doubts of the neigbouring state and ensure that it utilises only its share of the allocated water.

But the AP BJP leader and former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari stressed on the need for all parties to come on to a single platform cutting across political affiliations to protect the interests of Andhra Pradesh. She also felt that if the proposed irrigation projects in Telangana were completed the state would not get water even for the first crop.

YSRCP leader Umareddy Venkateswarlu said that AP now has a new challenge from TS government. The state suffered loss with increase in height of Almatti from 519 metres to 524 metres. If the TS government completes the proposed irrigation projects then AP would be deprived of its share of water, he said.

Krishna Delta Parirakshana Samithi convener K Shivaji said that the AP governemnt should oppose the proposed projects on Godavari and Krishna by TS government as it goes against the interests of AP. Andhra Intellectuals Forum convener Ch Srinivas said that the state government should form all-party committee to protect the interests of AP.

Completing Polavaram project by 2018 was the only solution to resolve Godavari water disputes. The management of both Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam projects should be handed over to Central government to resolve disputes between AP and TS governments, he said.
