Achyutapuram (Visakhapatnam): Work came to a grinding halt at Brandix India Apparel City (BIAC) as more women joined strike on Monday demanding higher wages and facility to withdraw Provident Fund savings.

Around 7,000 women out of the total workforce of 19,000 on Friday afternoon came on to the roads demanding that their wages be hiked to a minimum of Rs 10,000.

The company immediately shutdown all the 10 units in the SEZ and told the workers that the corporate head office in Sri Lanka would take a decision on their demands by April 30.

The women remained adamant and said they would report to work only after a decision on the new wages was announced. During the last two days, the State government dispatched officials to the villages and requested the women to report to the duties.

On the other hand, the Left unions also toured the villages and explained to them on how to negotiate the wages.
