Tuni (East Godavari): Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu visited in various villages in Thondangi and Tuni Mandal in the district where water problem was reported due to summer on Tuesday. Accompanied by Rural Water Supply department officials and Mandal-level officers, he visited AV Nagaram and Bendapudi in Thondangi Mandal and Tethagunta and Valluru in Tuni Mandal on Tuesday.

He issued on the spot instructions to officials to take up immediate measures for the provision of drinking water by making alternative arrangements like a supply of water from nearby villages, pipelines, transportation if requires. In this connection, the Minister said that the state government had taken a decision to have a visit by Ministers, other people’s representatives, department senior officers in drought-affected villages in the state to assess the situation and to take up immediate relief measures.

While addressing the public at Valluru village near Tuni, the Minister said that the Government was very particular to protect the people from heat weave in the coming two months, especially during the month of May and necessary instructions were already issued to the departments to take up precautionary measures like opening of water kiosks to provide drinking water and buttermilk to the general public, both in rural and urban areas.

He said that 357 Mandals in the state were declared drought-affected and an amount of Rs 39 crore, Rs 3 crore each for thirteen districts, was released. The Minister said that need of the hour was to protect the groundwater level and suggested the public take up water conservation methods like soak pits to preserve ground water.

It was targeted to take up 10,000 soak pits with an amount of Rs 3.3 crore in the district. He further advised them to dig farm ponds in the fields, where the government was supporting in the name of Panta Sanjeeveni programme with Rs 59 crore in the district. With regard to housing to the poor, the Minister said that 1,250 houses were sanctioned for housing in Tuni constituency each costing Rs 2.75 lakh and 5,000 houses for Tuni municipality, costing Rs 5 lakh each.

The Minister said that efforts have been made to complete the Pushkara Lift Irrigation scheme in full form, which was started with Rs 300 crore to provide irrigation to the villages in Tuni Mandal and to tail-end villages like Valluru. He said that this scheme was in progress, completed up to Hansavaram village, and expected to reach tail-end villages for the Kharif season.

Earlier, the Minister visited AV Nagaram village in Thondangi Mandal and inspected the progress of PHC buildings being taken up with Rs 1.25 crore and distributed tree guards for the protection of trees at a water tank. He also inspected Neeru Chettu programme works at Neeladrirayuni tank in the village.

Later, the Minister participated in soak pits formation works at Bendapudi, Valluru and launched water kiosks at Thetagunta and Tuni. He also interacted with NREGS labour at Thetagunta and distributed buttermilk to them. Yanamala Krishnudu, Chairman, Tuni Agricultural Marketing Committee, S Lova Raju, Chairman of Thandava Sugars and I Satyanarayana, Chairman of Tuni Municipality accompanied the Minister.
