Dharmavaram (Anantapur): Gotluru village panchayat in Dharmavaram Mandal in the district is the first panchayat to come out with a garbage disposal system by setting up a vermicompost yard due to the initiation by the young sarpanch Shivaiah who had built a compost yard and introduced garbage collection from every home in five hamlets coming under the panchayat.

The panchayat launched the scheme under 'Swachh Bharath' programme and was collecting the refuse and garbage from every house. Tonnes of garbage is collected by the panchayat workers by cycle rickshaw mounted garbage bins and brought to the vermicompost yard where the garbage is segregated into the dry, wet and plastic garbage.

The wet and dry garbage are transferred into vermicompost pits and processed into organic manure in a span of six months. Already the collected garbage is in a processing stage and it would take another two months for the garbage to graduate into organic manure.

Sarpanch Shivaiah talking to 'The Hans India' at the compost yard said that the scheme devised by the panchayat was aimed at boosting the financial position of the panchayat and earn extra revenue for the panchayat to undertake developmental programmes. The model compost yard built by the panchayat is being visited by several other panchayat representatives and taking a clue from the panchayat.

Shivaiah says that he had spent his own funds to purchase two cycle rickshaws and also to take care of other related expenditure including a purchase of garbage bins. The compost yard has15 pits to accommodate the segregated garbage and process the same into manure in the pits.

A machine to compress plastic and other metals into a condensed form is being procured by the panchayat so that the plastic and metallic garbage can be exported in condensed form. Three panchayat staffers were engaged in the exclusive business of segregating the garbage collected every day and are being paid Rs 4,500 each.

The sarpanch said that out of enthusiasm to achieve something, he has embarked on the project without knowing the sources of funding by indulging in the project as one of the stakeholders. The sarpanch appealed to DWMA project director Nagabushanam to release wages for the panchayat workers engaged in the compost yard business under the NREGS scheme.

The sarpanch said that the scheme has not only helped the panchayat to effectively manage garbage but also to transform the village into a clean village and also earn revenue for the panchayat as organic manure is in great demand.
