Hyderabad: People in Vizianagaram and Anantapur districts have a tough summer ahead with the water situation getting worse by the day. Borewells gone dry, ground water levels receded and water levels reached dead storage situations in reservoirs

  • Water is at dead storage levels in the reservoirs
  • Groundwater recedes alarmingly .

In Vizianagaram district, the water levels in reservoirs receded beyond dead storage levels. The situation has been bleak since February. Against the demand of 3.40 crore liters per day, not even only half of it is available. The River Champavati, the lifeline of the district, has gone dry adding to the woes.

According to hydro-geologist Srinivas, the infiltration wells dug in the river bed are not receiving any inflows. “The sand mafia removed sand near the pump houses and sufficient water is not getting collected in the infiltration wells.

The pump houses at Nellimarla, Jarjapu Peta and Mushidipalli are not discharging water in sufficient quantity to meet the growing demand,” he added.

The fall of ground water level is alarming in Ravada near Vizianagaram (10 meters), Jonnada (12.19), S Kota (10.65), Cheepurupalli (10), Viyyampeta (13.35) and Terlam (16.65). The condition in Agency areas is even worse.

The ground water level receded by 17.46 meters in Kurukutti of Salur mandal. Of the 13,800 bore wells in the district, about 6,000 are not functional. In some of the functional bore wells, the fluoride content is beyond the permissible levels making them unfit for drinking.

Jalubuguda village in Kurupam mandal is bearing the brunt of the water shortage. People were seen trekking several kilometers to get a pail of water.

Vizianagaram Zilla Parishad chairperson Sobha Swati Rani said that the civic body is spending Rs 58.50 lakh on drinking water. “We are going to introduce new process to make water exploiting moisture in air.

The process will be implemented with the help of Japan’s technology for the benefit of hill top Agency villages,” she added.

In Rayadurgam constituency in Anantapur, horticulture crops in thousands of acres are withering away due to lack of water.

Hanumantu, a farmer from Gonabavi invested Rs six lakh to sink at least 26 bore wells. Only, one produced some water, which he is using to quench the thirst of sheep.

He is supporting the family working as a casual labourer and is ready to move to Bangalore in search of work.
