Kakinada: The Kakinada Customs and Central Excise has earned Rs 1,208 crore during the previous financial year (2015-16) and is in anticipation of 20 percent rise in the current financial year, said Vijayawada Customs Commissioner SK Rahman.

He was here to participate in the one-day seminar on ‘Kakinada Port Survey - Vision 2020’ organised at Hotel Royal Park on Tuesday by Cocanada Chamber of Commerce with stake holders in port activities.

He also said that with three ports, two existing Kakinada anchorage and deep water ports and the KSEZ port, to come up, the industrial activity, the two LNG terminals and the container service operations by Kakinada Sea Ports were major indications for development of port activity.

Turning his attention towards illegal transportation of oils, cigarettes smuggling, rice diversion from port area after loading into ships for various destinations abroad and other contraband in the vicinity of Kakinada port, the Commissioner said that a coastal protection office was started in Kakinada to keep special tab on all these illegal activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajamahendravaram Air Port in-charge Raj Kishore explained in detail about the expansion of runway to accommodate bigger aircrafts for changing industrial needs. He said that shortly air services would be started from Rajamahendravaram to Tirupati, Chennai and Benguluru. To a question, he said that if airway operators come forward, the AAI would accommodate services to both Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada from Rajamahedravaram. He said that the night landing facility at Rajamahendravaram airport paved way for introduction of more services in near future to various destinations.

Kakinada Sea ports representative Muralidhar explained about various developmental activities including the container service at the port. He said that this would be of immense use for small entrepreneurs in entire coastal AP and Telangana.

Earlier, the Cocanada Chamber of Commerce president, Dantu Surry Rao, explained in detail about holding the seminar keeping in view the needs by 2020 in port operations. Representatives of exporters and importers attended.
