Hyderabad: The Telangana Energy Department is unhappy with Andhra Pradesh as it failed to keep its promise of selling electricity at lesser rate than private companies. When approached for the promised electricity, Andhra Pradesh was not responding, according to sources.

Andhra Pradesh, which claims to have surplus power, has recently offered to sell it to Telangana. The present power generation capacity in Telangana is 5,400 MW.

The demand during April was 7,194 MW, which was an all-time high. The demand during April 2014 was 6,493 MW, in the same month in 2015 it touched 6,661 MW, but this year it reached a new high of 7,194 MW.

As the demand increased, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy said that the government was ready to purchase required power to ensure that there were no power cuts in the state.

The minister said that the government was ready to purchase power at cheaper rate wherever it was required. Jagadish Reddy said, “the Andhra Pradesh authorities told us that they are ready to provide power at a cheaper rate than the private companies.

They went on to the extent to say that they will provide power at one paisa lesser than what the private companies were providing.”

The minister revealed that earlier when the government floated tender for purchase of 300 MWs, the Andhra Pradesh had quoted a rate of Rs 5.35 per unit. “The power what we are now purchasing is offered at Rs 4.63 per unit.

When the Andhra Pradesh authorities said that they were ready to provide power even one paisa lesser than the private one, we wrote to them but there was no response to the letters,” the minister said.

The minister informed that the government was purchasing 1,500 MWs from different sources. He alleged that the authorities in Andhra Pradesh were playing hide-and-seek over sale of power.
