Vijayawada: Keeping in view of Krishna Pushkaralu to be held in August 2016, the National Highways Authority of India is trying to complete the part of the Outer Ring Road works connecting Peda Avutupalli village of Gannavaram Mandal to Gollapudi village on the outskirts of Vijayawada city. The Government has awarded the work to Gammon India company nearly five years ago.

The ORR was designed to connect the Kaza toll gate junction of Guntur district to Gannavaram Mandal of Krishna district passing via Tadepalli and Venkatapalem villages of Guntur district and Nunna, Mustabada villages of Krishna district. The State government had acquired over 1100 acres land and handed over to the NHAI for a construction of the ORR.

The total length of the ORR project is about 48 km. The NHAI is trying to complete the 18 km stretch from Gannavaram to Gollapudi to divert the traffic connecting Hyderabad, Eluru, and Vizag. The contractor has started the work two months ago at China Avutuaplli and continued up to Purushottamapatnam village of Gannavarm Mandal. The highway will pass via Mustabada, Nunna and reach Gollapudi.

With the completion of 18 km stretch, the vehicles travelling from Hyderabad towards Eluru and Vizag can pass via Outer Ring Road stretch from Gollapudi village without entering Vijayawada city. So far, these vehicles travelled via Krishnalanka highway, Benz circle junction, Ramavappadu junction and passed towards Eluru.

The Outer Ring Road was designed to divert the traffic of Chennai-Kolkata route as well as Hyderabad-Kolkata route. The works connecting Kaza toll plaza to Gollapudi also started and progressing at a slow pace. As part of the ORR project, 3.2 km bridge will be constructed on Krishna river at a cost of Rs 80 crore at Venkatapalem.

With less than three months left for Krishna Pushkaralu, the NHAI officials and the State government are putting pressure on the contractor to complete the ORR works before August 2016. Krishna District Collector Babu A also recently inspected the bridge being constructed on Krishna river and expressed displeasure over the slow progress and low quality of the works.

A senior officer working in NHAI, Vijayawada said efforts were on to speed up the works for Krishna Pushkaralu. Denizens in Vijayawada too are eagerly waiting for the completion of part of the ORR works from Gollapudi to China Avutupalli village of Gannavaram Mandal so that the traffic in Vijayawada city will come down drastically. All big vehicles travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru, Vizag will be diverted from Gollapudi without entering the city.
