Speaking on the occasion, Abhijat said a survey was conducted by the government and it was found that 1.8 crore housing were needed to provide shelter to the poor and lower income groups. He said other than providing new houses, under the scheme, funds would be given to the eligible people to improve conditions in the existing houses.

Stating that the Central government was according to top priority to the housing for the poor, Abhijat said the housing scheme would be linked to the banks for providing loans and construction of the houses would be of high quality. Appreciating the system adopted in Visakhapatnam for weeding out ineligible beneficiaries, Joint Secretary said other States should also adopt the same model.

He said Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu were way ahead of other States in identifying the lands and the beneficiaries. District Collector Yuvaraj gave a power point presentation on the selection of beneficiaries, acquisition of land and MoUs entered into with Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Indian Railways and other government bodies regarding land.

The Collector said over 1.84 lakh applications were received online and after making Aadhaar number mandatory, names of people having an own house were deleted. The government issued a GO 296 for regularisation of 100 square yards and those who benefited from this GO were also rejected in the housing list.

Names of those owning houses were also checked with APEPDCL and tax assessment list with GVMC and later deleted. Municipal and Housing Board officials from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry were present.
