Vijayawada: The State government is ready to settle the disputes with the Telangana regarding the sharing of Krishna and Godavari waters amicably. Referring to a letter written by the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to Union Minister Uma Bharti on May 31 asking her not to issue draft notification on water sharing, Minister for Water Resources Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao said that both governments should honour the decision of the Krishna River Management Board.

In an informal chat with reporters here on Friday, the Minister said that Uma Bharati should settle the disputes between the two neighbouring States through discussion in apex council. KCR wrote in his letter addressing Uma Bharti that the Brijesh Kumar tribunal is yet to consider the plea of Telangana State and pass an appropriate award. He contended that issue of notification at this stage would perpetuate the injustice meted out to Telangana State for the past six decades by erstwhile State of Andhra Pradesh.

The TS Chief Minister said that such notification is contemplated by the sister board of the Godavari River Management Board and added that the Krishna River Management Board had forwarded the draft notification without adequate consultation with partner States.

Uma Maheswara Rao said that as per statistics of the Telangana government, of the total 2.8 crore acres land in that State, 1.1 crore is cultivable. Telangana gazette itself stated that 88 lakh acres land is cultivation out of it. Irrigation facility was provided to 56 lakh acres in the combined State.

The Telangana State has to provide irrigation facility to 30 lakh acres only and there is no truth in KCR government’s claim to provide irrigation facility to one crore acres through 34 ongoing projects, said the Minister. He said in Andhra Pradesh, 1.95 crore acres land is under cultivation and the State government is planning to provide irrigation facility to another 30 lakh acres through ongoing projects.
