Tirupati: The suicide of Balaji, who was working as a VRA in the remote KVB Puram mandal office in the district, snowballed into a major issue with various political parties and organisations taking up district-wide stir to press for the arrest of those who driven Balaji to commit suicide and also justice to the victim’s family.

The political parties, including YSR Congress Party, CPM, CPI, RPI, and Rajaka Sangham Salivahana Sangham, have decided to stage a mass protest in front of the Collectorate in Chittoor on June 6. They demanded the government to arrest and prosecute KVB Puram SI, constable and TDP leader, who were accused in the FIR, and register a murder case against them and provide compensation of Rs 25 lakh and a government job to the family of Balaji.

Speaking to the media here on Saturday, RPI State president P Anjaiah said that Balaji took the extreme step of ending his life unable to bear the humiliation he faced in the KVB Puram police station. After a complaint from a TDP leader following his daughter and Balaji’s son Ranjith who are in love, disappeared, police took Balaji into custody and tortured him in a most humiliating manner for five days during his confinement in the station in the presence of his wife and others, leading to his suicide.

CPM district secretary K Kumar Reddy criticised the District Collector for his failure to take a suo moto action in the case involving a revenue employee, belonging to Schedule Caste. The incident reveals the horrifying fact that there is no guarantee of constitutional right for the life and safety of a poor, common man he said.

YSR Congress Party State secretary Sk Basha, part SC Cell State secretary Rajendra and others expressed their support to the stir and warned that the struggle would be intensified if the government failed to take immediate action against all those accused in the case.

Meanwhile, a police picket was set up at KVB Puram on Saturday following the dharna by all the parties and various organisations on Friday as a precautionary measure.
