Vijayawada: Assembly Speaker Dr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao said Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (Unicef) are jointly conducting State-level symposium on June 17 in Vijayawada to discuss important issues of child nutrition, infant mortality, maternal mortality, sensitisation to pregnant women, and strengthening of health care system for children below two years of age in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing a media conference here on Wednesday, Speaker Kodela Sivaprasada Rao said the average infant mortality in Andhra Pradesh is 40 per 1000 and maternal mortality is 92 per one lakh against the national average of 167 deaths per one lakh.

He said the government has decided to bring down infant mortality and maternal mortality in the State and is working out plans to achieve the objective. Dr Kodela said international experts on medical and health will take part in the seminar and explain the measures to be taken to minimise the infant and maternal mortality. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will also address the meeting.

Dr Kodela said noted expert on health care Louis Georges Arsenault, representative, UNICEF, Dr M K Bhan, former secretary, Department of Bio-Technology, Government of India, Dr Saba Merbathu, Chief, Child Development and Nutrition, UNICEF India, and Dr James Levinson, Professor, Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, USA and many other experts will take part in the symposium.
